๐Ÿ“ˆ Midday Check | July 31

๐ŸŸข Market is up since the open. Dow +0.4%, S&P 500 +0.6%, Nasdaq +0.9%, as strong Big Tech earnings offset rising bond yields.
๐Ÿ’ป Amazon is up about 11% on blowout Q2 earnings and strong cloud growth.

Bottom line: Big Tech earnings are driving stocks higher today, but rising bond yields are capping the gains.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Morning Brief | July 31

๐ŸŸข Stocks rallied Thursday. Dow rose 1.2% to 52,208. S&P 500 climbed 1.7% to 7,438. Nasdaq jumped 2.8% to 25,122. Markets bounced back from the Fed day selloff.

๐Ÿฆ Fed held rates at 3.5% to 3.75% in a 9-3 vote. Three officials dissented and wanted a hike. It's the first three way hawkish split since 2016.

๐Ÿ“… Microsoft, Meta, and Apple all reported this week. Microsoft and Meta beat big Wednesday night and jumped 16% and 11.5%. Apple beat on earnings Thursday night but guided soft on Q4 revenue, and the stock is falling today. Amazon also reported and jumped 11.7%. Treasury yields are climbing too. The 10 year yield is near 4.74%, the highest since January 2025.

๐Ÿ Big 7 check: Amazon up sharply on earnings. Apple down on weak guidance. Microsoft and Meta still riding Wednesday's pop.

๐Ÿฅ‡ Gold: around $4,090 an ounce, holding near record highs.

๐Ÿฅˆ Silver: near $58 an ounce, choppy this morning.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Thermal coal: $134 a tonne, up almost 3% on China heat wave demand.

โ›๏ธ Met coal: still elevated for the year, roughly in the $200 to $240 a tonne range. HCC trades at $83.65, AMR at $143.91.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Transocean (RIG): around $5.05, up slightly.

Bottom line: Apple's soft guidance and rising yields could pressure stocks today after Thursday's big rally.

World geopolitical and economic news quick read.

Jul 30th 2026

Iran war: The conflict has now spread to Egypt, with strikes hitting Egyptian port infrastructure for the first time. Iran's IRGC says the Strait of Hormuz stays closed as long as US "interference" continues. Saudi Arabia is now directly involved, running joint strikes with the US on Iranian proxies in Iraq, and 14 countries have backed a Saudi proposal for a "Maritime Defense Alliance" to protect shipping.

India protests: The protests weren't fully called off, the Cockroach Janta Party is now threatening to resume nationwide demonstrations after a court order. The court did order the release of detained protesters under 18, but the party says it'll go back to the streets if the government doesn't honor its commitments.

Oil: Still elevated and volatile. Brent is around $87 to $90, WTI around $84, both still up sharply from before the Iran escalation, driven directly by the Hormuz closure threat.

South Korea: The Kospi didn't just dip, it crashed. It's down about 10 to 11% over two straight sessions and roughly 34% in the past month, hitting its lowest level since early April. Samsung and SK Hynix, over half the index by weight, are getting hit hardest on AI chip valuation fears.

Big tech earnings today (July 30, 2026) split the market wide open.

1) Microsoft jumped 14% after beating on earnings. Azure crossed $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time, and Copilot growth impressed investors.

2) Meta fell over 9%. The company didn't give 2027 spending guidance and its cash pile shrank, which spooked the market on AI capex concerns.

3) Apple beat on both lines. EPS came in at $2.02 versus $1.89 expected, revenue hit $109.4 billion versus $108.65 billion expected, driven by a 22% jump in iPhone sales. But the stock slid around 4% after hours because services revenue missed estimates.

4) Amazon reported after the close too, with AWS growth reportedly around 31.6% keeping the cloud story strong. Full market reaction on Amazon was still coming in as results landed.

Overall theme: the market is rewarding real AI infrastructure payoff (Microsoft's Azure) and punishing spending without a clear payoff story (Meta), while Apple's hardware strength is being overshadowed by services softness.

๐Ÿ“ˆ What happened in South Korean Stock Market |  Quick Recap | Jul 30th

๐Ÿ”ด Kospi crashed as much as 13% in the morning, triggering a circuit breaker for the second straight day in a row, something that's never happened before in Korea. It closed down about 6%, bringing the two-day drop to 16%.

๐Ÿ’พ SK Hynix was the trigger. Its earnings actually beat records, but investors dumped the stock anyway on fears the AI chip boom is overheating. Shares fell around 16%, its worst day ever.

๐Ÿ’ธ A single-stock leveraged ETF tied to SK Hynix collapsed over 32% in one day, showing just how much leverage had built up in retail portfolios.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ The government called an emergency F4 meeting that evening, led by Deputy PM Koo Yun-cheol, to figure out what to do.

๐Ÿ“‹ Regulators moved fast and capped leveraged ETF and ETN holdings tied to Samsung and SK Hynix at 20% of an investor's portfolio.

๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Retail investors are shaken. The Kospi is now down about 33% for the month, a record monthly drop.

Bottom Line: This wasn't a broad economic scare, it was a leverage unwind. Retail investors piled into leveraged bets on AI chip stocks, and when SK Hynix's earnings didn't meet sky-high expectations, the unwind cascaded fast enough to trip circuit breakers two days running and force the government into emergency action.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Stock Market Recap | July 30
๐ŸŸข Markets rebounded from yesterday's selloff. Dow and S&P 500 up over 0.5%, Nasdaq 100 up 1.5%.
๐Ÿ’ป Microsoft jumped about 14%, its best day in years. Cloud revenue grew 43%, the fastest pace since 2022.
๐Ÿ“‰ Meta dropped about 10% after its guidance missed expectations, adding to yesterday's slide.
๐Ÿ† Big winners: Microsoft, Caterpillar, Amazon. Big losers: Nike, Johnson & Johnson, Disney.
๐Ÿค– Chipmakers rebounded too, with Micron and AMD both up over 13%. The AI trade isn't dead, just pickier.
๐Ÿ‘€ Watch for more earnings ahead to see if this bounce holds.
Bottom line: strong Microsoft results pulled the market out of its slump, but Meta's stumble shows AI spending still needs to prove itself.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Stock Market Recap | July 29

โ€ข ๐Ÿ”ด Markets closed sharply lower as investors turned cautious ahead of major tech earnings.

โ€ข ๐Ÿฆ The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged, but offered few clues on when cuts could begin, disappointing investors.

โ€ข ๐Ÿ’ป AI and semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia and AMD, extended recent losses, dragging the Nasdaq lower.

โ€ข โ›ฝ Oil prices climbed after renewed geopolitical tensions, raising concerns that inflation could remain stubborn.

โ€ข ๐Ÿ“Š Investors shifted money from high-growth tech into more defensive sectors like healthcare and financials.

โ€ข ๐Ÿ‘€ All eyes are now on earnings from Microsoft and Meta, with Apple and Amazon reporting soon. These results could determine the market's next direction.

Bottom Line: Today's selloff was driven by Fed uncertainty, higher oil prices, and weakness in AI stocks. The next few trading sessions will likely depend on whether Big Tech earnings can justify the market's high expectations.
